Dec 2013 When I contacted Dr Masel to see if there were any issues or concerns I needed to address on Keith’s behalf, Dr Masel said Anna told him about an injectable insulin that holds for a week and thought Keith would be a “perfect candidate” and continued on saying that if he himself had diabetes he’d be jumping at the chance to have only one shot per week vs daily. Since Dr Masel continued to have Keith’s blood sugar reading 2 times daily when it was recommended in May 2011 to reduce to 1 reading per day and by referring Keith as the “perfect candidate”, Dr Masel wasn't interested in reducing number of shots but more interested in using Keith to test this injectable once a week insulin.
Keith's and my goal... zero shots
Even with Keith having blood sugar readings of 300, TideWay didn't think it critical enough to take Keith's blood sugar reading over the weekend.
May 2008 May 12th when I arrived to visit Keith at TideWay, TideWay's RN Anna Latham stated to me Keith was started on a medication Metformin because he was diabetic.
Dr Masel without my knowledge or consent put Keith on Metformin stating Keith was diabetic. Several blood sugar readings had been taken in April but I did not agree the numbers required medication. I requested the Metformin stopped and Keith be given exercise!
Metformin stopped on May 28, 2008. NOTE how Dr Masel had Keith’s blood sugar taken daily for the months of June and July after I had the Metformin stopped.

Director Shepherd to Dr Masel... recommended decreasing Keith's Lantus but Dr Masel responding "we had tried this and his blood sugar went up"

Keith has millions in the bank but TideWay can't provide Keith with a lancet device that cost $5.84
Keith not taken to hospital till evening yet this document was filed at 10:31 am

Note in this July 16, 2008 letter from Dr Masel how he points out on June 24th Keith’s blood sugar was 196 but doesn’t mention or point out on June 9th Keith’s blood sugar was 59.
Per Director Shepherd to Dr Masel... It seems by history that 20 units of Lantus is as low as you have been able to go on insulin without compromising diabetes control
NOTE Keith's blood sugar fasting numbers while at 18 units of Lantus from Jan 28th to Feb 7th...
79, 119, 141, 94, 89, 88, 82, 80, 101, 94, 93
WHY did Dr Masel up Keith's Lantus to 20 units?
On 9/7/2014 TideWay staff signed off as administering 20 units of Lantus but Keith wasn't given his Lantus.
Dr Masel told court Keith's A1C taken on Aug 31st was 11.6 but the A1C report shown below is dated 7/27/2010
I can't tell you how many times during my visits or while on the phone with Keith staff stuck Keith again and again and again to get a droplet of blood. Keith would get it right the first time. Not to mention to my disbelief one time before I could open my mouth Keith took the needle and just stuck his finger. On more then one occasion Keith's device was missing the cap which restricts the depth of needle and then their were times when the device itself was missing. One time while I was at TideWay, Keith's test kit was no where to be found. TideWay staff went to get "TideWay's diabetes kit" to use on Keith. I did not permit staff to use "TideWay's diabetes kit" on Keith and told staff Keith has five million dollars in the bank to buy whatever he needs. Apparently TideWay uses "TideWay's diabetes testing kit" on multiple clients. Total health hazard... How many times has TideWay used "TideWay's diabetes kit" on Keith?

Sept 2014 blood sugar sheet
I had to submit a food sheet to TideWay accounting for everything Keith ate during my visits. We also have to have Keith back to TideWay by 8pm. On 9/7/2014 Keith was in such horrible unstable condition I took him to the ER. I called TideWays on call mgr indicating Keith was in the ER and we would not be back by 8pm. When we arrived at 11pm no staff was there at the facility who could administer Keith's Lantus shot. As you can see at the bottom of the food sheet submitted to TideWay, the on call RN could not get to TideWay so Dr Masel was contacted and said it was OK for Keith to NOT get his Lantus shot. Note the blood sugar sheet is signed off on 9/7/2014 as administering 20 units of Lantus to Keith. Also note the blood sugar recorded on the food sheet indicates BS 125 at 11pm but TideWay has a recorded blood sugar of 78.
Blood glucose reading of 325 recorded on 7/8/10
Two years later…
During my visit with Keith Aug 31, 2010 the RN told me Keith’s blood sugars were high and wanted to start Keith on another drug. Again Keith had been taken to an UTMB doctor and again Dr Masel/TideWay did NOT provide the doctor with my guardianship or contact information. I wanted to talk to the doctor. On the evening of Sept 13th, I was contacted by an ER doctor who told me Keith’s blood sugar was 400’s. I gave my consent immediately to the ER doctor to start Keith on insulin. Two hours later I called the hospital to see how Keith was doing. A woman gets on the phone and says, “I am Maggie Hindman an ad litem appointed by the court.” I didn’t know or care who she was I wanted to know how Keith was. I was horrified when I was told the insulin had not been started and Keith’s blood sugar was now in the 500’s. I was then told by Maggie Hindman I had been removed as Keith’s guardian and she was now his guardian. It was two days before the doctor from the hospital contacted me and apologized for the mix up as I was still Keith’s guardian.
See July 2010 med sheet.
Note on July 8, 2010 at the bottom of the med sheet there is a blood sugar reading of 325
See Aug 2010 med sheet.
Note there was a blood sugar reading of 395 recorded on Aug 12th
Back in May 2008 when I requested Metformin be stopped Dr Masel/TideWay took daily blood sugar readings for months afterwards so why didn’t Dr Masel/TideWay take daily blood sugar readings from the initial 325 reading on July 8th, 2010? Instead TideWay waited seven weeks before mentioning to me during my visit on Aug 31 Keith possibly being diabetic but again I was clueless because Dr Masel/TideWay did not provide my guardianship / contact information to the family doctor.
NOTE the A1C lab results of 11.6 is dated July 7/27/10 but Dr Masel told the court the AIC lab test was done Aug 31st.
Also note Dr Masel stating only able to get Keith to exercise twice in past two weeks.

Dr Masel told the court I endangered Keith's life but it was Dr Masel who endangered Keith's life by waiting two months before notifying me, not providing my guardianship/contact information to the UTMB doctor and then by postponing the ER doctor from administering the insulin so he could get a court order and have Maggie Hindman appointed as ad litem.
June 9 Keith's blood sugar was 59
June 24 Keith's blood sugar was 196
It wasn't till May 2014 I went back to review Keith’s blood sugar records specifically to see what the numbers were to see why the Lantus was pushed back up to 20 units and remained at 20 units. I contacted TideWay's RN Anna and asked who authorize the Lantus to remain at 20 units and she said Dr Masel. I sent two certified letters to Director Shepherd introducing myself as Keith's guardian and supplied a copy of my guardianship paperwork but Director Shepherd has not ever contacted me. I took Keith to meet and talk with Dr Hurt, Keith's family doctor at UTMB. Dr Hurt worked with Keith and me seeing Keith at 3 month intervals running a1c test and lowering Keith's Lantus along with the metformin until Keith was off all diabetes medication. If I hadn't researched Keith would still be getting stuck three times a day with needles and taking unnecessary medication. Unfortunately because I didn't research Keith's blood sugar numbers sooner Keith had been stuck with endless unnecessary needles for years.
Dr Masel told court Keith's A1C taken on Aug 31st was 11.6 but the A1C report is dated 7/27/2010
I am Keith’s guardian for a reason which is to protect my brother keeping him mentally and physically healthy without the use of unnecessary medications. While some medicines are necessary, many health issues can be addressed and corrected by diet, exercise and proper sleep. As Keith’s guardian, every doctor Keith is seen by should be provided a copy of my guardianship / contact information and directed to contact me directly to discuss matters involving Keith but for eleven years TideWay / Dr Masel continue to send Keith to doctors with a list of medications and contact information of who to bill so they get paid but do not acknowledge me and do not ever provide my information.
I have repeatedly asked for Keith to be provided exercise stating how Keith is completely out of shape having no muscle, endurance, flexibility, stamina or stability. Annual report after annual report states Keith refuses exercise. Problem is not Keith. Keith loves to walk. There is a Walmart adjacent to TideWay and Keith would walk back and forth all day but TideWay only offered Keith two types of exercise... ride a stationary bike or pool.... neither of which Keith has any interest.
My first question to any and every doctor will always be can this problem be addressed without the use of medication. The way to prevent type 2 diabetes requires both proper diet AND exercise.
